The Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI) is a comprehensive instrument
for assessing a number of dimensions of the chronic pain experience,
including pain intensity, emotional distress, cognitive and functional
adaptation, and social support. It is one of the best instruments
available for assessing overall adjustment of chronic pain patients
and the outcomes of treatment interventions.
The MPI Computer Program Version 3 offers
many advances over the previous DOS version of the program (V2.1).
Like V2.1, V3 computes raw scale and T-scores on the MPI scales,
and then computes multivariate profile classification statistics
based on the University of Pittsburgh Multiaxial Assessment of
Pain (MAP) empirically-derived taxonomy system. Patients are
classified into 1 of 3 frequently occurring profiles, “dysfunctional,” “interpersonally
distressed,” and “adaptive
coper.” In addition to these more traditional scoring approaches,
V3 includes many recent psychometric advances based on Item Response
Theory (IRT). These IRT approaches resolve the difficulties investigators
have noted for the MPI over the past 10 years. Two particular improvements
are: (1) the program now evaluates statistically for misfitting
item responses, and (2) two higher-order composite scale scores
are now computed from the primary MPI scales. Click here for
a sample main report. Also, the MPI program now can be used to
score any number of administrations of the MPI to an individual
patient. The program then can compute whether significant changes
occurred between administrations for each of the MPI scales (Click
here for
a sample t-test report).
Database issues are greatly improved with V3. A cumulative Access
database is maintained for all test and scoring data. This database
can be copied to another Access database and freely manipulated
by the user, or if preferred, the Access database can be written
to CSV files that can be directly read by Excel and many statistical
programs. Additionally, the exported database from the DOS V2.1
program can be read and imported into the Access database and is
automatically re-scored. The program also can import MPI item responses
from CSV files written by Excel or other spreadsheets. The program
will import data written by the Teleform software (the MPI in Teleform
format, but not the Teleform scanner software itself, is included).
Finally, Version 3 of the MPI can be administered directly on screen
by the program.
