Acute Perioperative Pain Services

Director:

Jacques E. Chelly, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Research, Department of Anesthesiology, University of Pittsburgh; Director, Regional Anesthesia (SHY/PUH)

Mission Statement:

To provide at all UPMC hospitals, state-of-the-art and effective treatment to control pain associated with surgery during the perioperative period in order to optimize recovery and patient satisfaction.

Clinical Protocol:

  1. We are committed to work with any surgeon at UPMC hospitals who choses to consult us. However, it is critical that we are consulted PRIOR to surgery to provide patients with optimum perioperative pain control.

Surgeons should contact us prior to surgery either directly and/or via the surgical posting by including the need for acute postoperative pain service. We require preoperative evaluation to decide on the most appropriate timing of the proposed treatment and obtained the appropriate informed consent.

In most cases, regional anesthesia and preemptive techniques are the bases of our therapeutic approach.
  2. We do not manage routine PCAs or post-op medications, as this is part of the surgical
care. Therefore, we do not consider these treatments as a part of the reason for being consulted, especially after surgery. However, as a group, we remain available for direct collegial discussions about the therapeutic option.

  3. Patients who have chronic and/or cancer pain should be referred to the in-patient chronic pain
service. This service is provided by Dr Doris Cope and her group with their own call/consult
    protocol.

  4. THE ACUTE PAIN SERVICE AT UPMC HOSPITALS IS AN ATTENDING AND NOT RESIDENT/FELLOW DRIVEN SERVICE. Please have the patient’s attending physician contact our attending physician, so we can discuss the options directly. We provide 24/7 coverage by an Acute Pain Attending WITH a dedicated pager and the commitment to answer pages within 30 mins. Currently services are located at:
